Increase Traffic with a How-To Business Video

Making a How-to video for your business is an easy way to drive traffic for your next marketing project. Working in any field it’s easy to forget that those on the outside looking in don’t always understand the message we’re trying to convey. If you’re a web developer you do this every time you create a link that doesn’t immediately have “Click Here” spelled out within. We assume they’ll know what we’d like them to do. However this isn’t always the case.

This is where creating a business how-to video can help your customer better understand the product or service they’re about to use. Checkout the example below we created for Meals on Wheels.

We created this video on a very small budget in less than a single day. The goal was to answer a few key questions about the new service. Our secret goal was to show users the app was available and how easy it was to download. We also wanted to tell them about some key features that might entice them to use the app.

Below we’ve outlined some ideas that might help you when considering how to develop your video concept.

Create a How-To Video For Your Product

  • Outline some reasons someone might want to use your service or product?
  • Give an exact example of a situation were your service/product is helpful.
  • Show them in a few simplified steps, no more than 5, how to use your product for the above example.
  • Keep the video short, remember social media networks like Instagram and twitter put a cap on the total length of uploaded videos. Longer videos do work, but they must have a higher entertainment factor.

Increased Traffic Through Value

Consider the last time you had trouble with a product? Did you search for a how-to video to help you solve it? Chances are you did. How did it make you feel about the brand, knowing they had easily accessible content to help you with your problem?

Video marketing isn’t always about driving a direct sale, by increasing customer satisfaction you’re bringing even more value to your brand.

Remember, creating a how-to video isn’t always about showing every detail of the service, but rather enticing the viewer to use the product, or feel more comfortable doing business with your brand. In our example how-to video, we quickly outlined some easy things you can do with the new mobile app. Helping the user see that the new app is easy to use and does everything they’d need it to do. Presented by a personality they know and trust.

Still struggling with ideas for a How-To Video, checkout some of these examples below.

Show Personality

We love this video because it shows the personality of the host. If you’re planning on hosting your own how-to video, consider not scripting each word, but rather showing a genuine personality that will better help your viewers relate to you.

Budget or No Budget – Think Outside the Box

If you haven’t seen this video yet, take a minute and watch it. It’s hilarious, weird and captivating all at once. It wasn’t created for a direct marketing purpose that we can find, but it has a great hidden message. How-To videos don’t need to carry a huge budget–or for that matter–even be filmed properly, although that part makes us cringe a little. It’s a great illustration for how thinking outside the box about the problems your product solves is priceless.

These Dentists’ Search Ranking Surged When They Did This

Gaining Community Engagement With Video Marketing

Dental school never trained Amee and Andy to be marketing experts, but they knew that they wanted their community in Justin, TX to not only know about the services they provide, but also about what drives them to do what they do.

They wanted to tell their story of their business and do it in a cost efficient way at minimal risk. As health care providers, not a marketing experts with unlimited resources – they sought something that could provide a good return on investment. When they learned that video can increase a website’s search ranking exponentially, they realized this was the perfect opportunity to make an investment that could accomplish both of their goals.

Capitalizing on Updated Search Algorithms

In 2013 google released a new search algorithm called Hummingbird that focused on user intent versus an exact search query. This helps websites rank higher because a video typically displays general product or brand overview information. Google being the good search engine it is, will then try and serve websites with videos faster than those without because the user will generally be able to attain more information related to their search more quickly.

Give it try the next time you do a google search, chances are you’ve already seen it at least one time today. Lookup how to make pumpkin bread, or how to program a remote control for your garage door opener. 99% of the time you’ll be shown a video of what you’re looking at the top of the page. Your business is no exception and customers are searching each day for services just like your’s or in the case of Amy and Andy–dentistry–and how they might benefit from choosing you over the competition.

Increase search ranking with video
How a search can yield a video result faster than a web page.

Now back to the case of Amy and Andy. After working together we helped them formulate three simple goals for their video.

  1. Create a video that illustrated that they’re not only service providers but also a part of the community they seek to serve.
  2. Increase brand value and drive traffic to their website by showcasing their background, family values and morals.
  3. To stay within their small business budget.

If you haven’t already, watch the results above. Videos like these help narrow the gap between a potential customer and a life long client. Introducing yourself and your business can be crucial when a customer is on the fence about choosing your business.

How To Add Video To Your Website

After you’ve finished producing your video, it’s important to add it to high traffic areas so you can benefit from all those views. Don’t worry, coding shouldn’t be scary, it’s actually a lot of fun and kinda cool once you get a little familiar with it.

What you’ll need:

  • Access to your website in a location where it’s possible to add code.
  • If you have an HTML website you’ll need a text editor, this can be Adobe Dreamweaver, NotePad++.
  • Special considerations should be made for custom websites or CMS systems. Sometimes these can strip code or block certain code from your site.
  • In the case of modern websites, most of them use Twitters Bootstrap, which is a mobile styling code library. The latest versions of WordPress and Joomla should have this code installed.

Where to Start:

First lets determine what type of website you have? Do you have a CMS? This is typically a site that allows you to post articles and make updates from a back end portal. If your website is basic HTML then you’ll need access to an FTP server that will allow you make changes to the code and place the new files on the server. In this example we’re going to assume you know where to update your website.

Fixed Width & Height Video Embed

The simplest way to embed a video into your website is to upload it to a video streaming service like YouTube. Using this method you’ll have a fixed pixel width and height video displayed on your website. Follow the steps below.

  1. Navigate to the YouTube or Facebook video you’d like to place on your site in a new tab in your browser.
  2. For YouTube click the “Share” button.

  3. Once the share dialog box appears click “Embed”

  4. Here you’ll be provide an iFrame code you’ll need to copy and paste into the code portion of your website. This will not work with a visual or wysiwyg editor. I’ll explain more in the next step.
How to embed youtube video in your website.
  5. This is where we copy the code into our website. Your code should look similar to this.
    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  6. Now place this code in the “text editor” part of your website. If you’re working with Joomla or WordPress switch to “HTML or Text” view. Locate the place you’d like to put the video in the code. If this becomes a problem, follow the actual text, if you’d like the video to show after a particular paragraph simply find the end of that paragraph and type a <br/> after the period. Then copy your code from above and paste it there. With a little luck, your video should look just like ours does below.

Adjustable Size Mobile Video Embeds

This is our favorite type of video embed. If you look at the video above, you’ll notice that it doesn’t fit the full width of your device. It might squeeze into the size of the screen when it’s small but if the screen grows to anything larger than it’s fixed width and height the video won’t increase in size with the screen.

We think this simply isn’t fair! Why not use as much real-estate as possible.

So the simple fix is Twitter’s Bootstrap responsive video embeds. You’ll need to be a little more comfortable with coding but the idea is very similar to the above method. Also make sure you have at least Bootstrap 3.0 for this to work. In most cases you should be able to add this code to your website and it will either work, or it will display smaller than full width, so don’t worry you won’t break anything if you don’t have bootstrap.

Step 1 – Find the src code from the youtube share iframe for the video you’d like to embed. In the example above you’ll see it’s src=""save that because we’ll need it in the next step.

Step 2 – Copy the twitter bootstrap responsive 16 x 9 embed code we’ve listed below. It’s important to place this code after any previous div tags in your article. Usually at the very end or very beginning of your article works. In our case we’re placing it at the bottom.

<div class="embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9">
  <iframe class="embed-responsive-item" src="___PLACE YOUR YOUTUBE SRC HERE____" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Step 3 -Place your source code from your video between the ” ” in the code above. That’s it, you’re done. If it works correctly your video should display like the video below. Experiment with different size screens so you can see the difference it makes. This code should work for nearly any embed video code, vemeo, facebook, ect.

Let us know in the comments below if this method helped explain how to add a video to your website. If you’re the type that’s just too busy to mess with the squinty eye’d coding be sure to get in touch and our website developers would be happy to help you get your video up and running!
